A method (500) of controlling a vacuum pump to pump hydrogen gas with minimal or no supplementary purge gas, the method (500) comprising controlling (501) a rotor of the vacuum pump to operate in a first mode for pumping hydrogen gas, wherein a first rotation frequency of the rotor in the first mode is controlled to be greater than or equal to 120Hz.[French]
