  • Multiple-class applications

Multiple-class trademark applications are not possible in Qatar. A separate application has to be filed for each class.

  • Filing requirements in Qatar

The official languages of the proceedings before the Qatari trademark office are Arabic and English.

For obtainment of the date of filing a trademark application in Qatar must contain:
- applicant's details;
- trademark representation;
- list of goods/services;
- payment of the official fees.

The duly legalized Power of Attorney up to the Qatari Consulate in the applicant’s country, further super legalized by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is required. A legal Arabic translation of the POA should be certified by an approved local translation office in Qatar. The original of the Power of Attorney should be filed within 1 month from the filing date.

In case the applicant is a legal entity, an Extract from the commercial register or a certified copy of the Certificate of incorporation, is required. Legalisation up to the Qatari Consulate and Arabiс translation are required. An original document may be filed within 1 month from the filing of the application.

If priority is claimed, a certified copy of the legalized up to Qatar Consulate Priority Document and its Arabic and English translations should be filed within 1 month from the filing date.

  • Examination, publication and opposition to a trademark application in Qatar

Trademark applications in Qatar are subject to formal and substantive examination. Upon acceptance of the trademark application it will be published in the Trademarks Bulletin and any third party may file an opposition within 2 months from the date of publication.

  • Grant, validity term and trademark renewal

Official fees for publication and granting should be paid within 30 days upon receiving of the notification confirming the approval of the application. The validity term of a trademark in Qatar is 10 years, ending one day before the filing anniversary and it’s indefinitely renewable for 10 year periods. An application for renewal must be filed within 12 months before the expiration of a trademark or 6 months after the expiration thereof upon payment of the surcharge.

  • Duration of registration procedure

The processing time from first filing to registration is approximately 12-14 months in case of a smooth procedure.

  • Use requirement

Registration of the trademark in Qatar may be cancelled on the grounds of non-use upon a third party’s request if it has not been used for 5 consecutive years from registration of a trademark.

  • Representation by a trademark attorney

It is obligatory for foreign applicants to perform trademark registration through a local trademark attorney in Qatar.

  • Note

The time limit to file a response to the provisional refusal of an international registration in Qatar is 2 months from the Notification issued by the Trademark Office. It is necessary to appoint a local representative for filing a response.
