  • Term for filing a patent application in Qatar

A patent application claiming conventional priority should be filed within 12 months from the earliest priority date. The term is not restorable.

  • Filing requirements in Qatar

The official languages of a Qatari patent application are Arabic and English. The Arabic translation of the required documents is allowed to be filed within 3 months from the filing date.

To obtain the filing date, a patent application in Qatar must contain:
- applicant’s and inventor’s details;
- title of the invention;
- specification, claims and abstract of the invention;
- drawings (if any);
- payment of the official fees.

If priority is claimed, a certified copy of the Priority Document and its Arabic and English translations should be filed within 3 month from the filing date.

The duly legalized Power of Attorney up to the Qatari Consulate in the applicant’s country, further super legalized by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is required. A legal Arabic translation of the POA should be certified by an approved local translation office in Qatar. The term for submission of the document is 3 months from the filing date.

If the applicant is not the inventor, a Deed of Assignment legalized up to the Qatari Consulate with the Arabic translation should be filed within 3 month from the filing date.

If the applicant is a corporate body, a Certificate of incorporation or Articles of association is also required to be submitted within 3 month from the filing date. Legalisation up to the Qatari Consulate and Arabiс translation are required.

  • Examination of a Qatari patent application

The Qatari patent application undergoes the formal and substantive examination. Substantive examination should be requested upon filing of the application.

  • Novelty grace period

No novelty grace period is stipulated in Qatari legislation.

  • Grant, validity term and maintenance fees

Official fees for granting and publication should be paid within 3 months from the date when Notice of Allowance was issued. The validity term of Qatari patents is 20 years from the filing date. Annuities are due for pending applications starting from the 2nd year and are due on the anniversary of the filing date. Late payment is possible within 12 months grace period by paying a corresponding surcharge.

It takes an average of 2-3 years from filing up to grant of a patent in Qatar in case of a smooth procedure.

  • Utility model

Utility model protection is not stipulated by the IP legislation in Qatar.
