Fees associated with filing industrial design applications in Qatar, as well as other design fees, are available in the fee calculator.
- Multiple design applications
A design application in Qatar may include up to 100 designs, provided that all designs belong to the same class under the Locarno Classification.
- Filing requirements of design application in Qatar
The official languages of a Qatari design application are Arabic and English.
For the obtainment of the filing date, the industrial design application in Qatar should contain:
- applicant’s and designer’s details;
- copies of the design in the form of photographs or other pictorial representations (for two-dimensional) or multiple copies of each view with up to 25 figures (for three-dimensional);
- payment of the prescribed fees.
A certified copy of the Priority Document, duly legalized up to the Qatari Consulate and super‐legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar, must be submitted along with a verified Arabic translation thereof.
An original of Power of Attorney, duly legalized up to the Qatari Consulate and super‐legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar, must be provided along with a verified Arabic translation thereof.
If the applicant is not the designer, a Deed of Assignment from the designer(s) to the applicant, duly legalized up to the Qatari Consulate and super-legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar, must be submitted along with a verified Arabic translation.
If the applicant is a corporate body, an Extract from the Commercial Register or Articles of Incorporation, or any equivalent document, legalized up to the Qatari Consulate and super-legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar, must be filed along with a verified Arabic translation thereof.
An industrial design application claiming priority must be filed within six months from the earliest priority date.
- Examination of a design application in Qatar
Industrial designs in Qatar are subject to formal examination within 30 days from the filing date. No substantive examination is conducted.
- Novelty grace period
The novelty grace period in Qatar constitutes 6 months before the filing date or priority date, if the application became available to the public in national or international exhibitions.
- Grant, validity term and design renewal fees
The validity term of an industrial design in Qatar is 5 years from the filing date. This term is renewable twice for 5-year periods up to the total term of 15 years. A renewal application should be filed within the last year of the protection period. Late payment is possible within a six-month grace period upon payment of a surcharge.
- Duration of registration procedure
The duration of the overall registration procedure has not yet been formally established.
- Representation by a patent attorney
It is obligatory for foreigners to perform the patent prosecution in Qatar through an agent, a registered Qatari patent attorney.
