• Filing requirements of a design application in Liechtenstein

The official language of the proceedings is German.

To obtain the date of filing an industrial design application in Liechtenstein should contain:
- request to register an industrial design in Liechtenstein;
- information about the applicant(s);
- description of the design;
- drawings;
- payment of the prescribed fees.

Priority Document should be submitted within 6 months from the first filing date if the priority is claimed. Priority document drawn up in English, German, Italian or French will not require further translation.

Simply signed Power of Attorney should be submitted simultaneously with filing a design application. Legalization or notarization is not required.

The deadline for filing an industrial design application claiming priority is six months from the date of priority.

Industrial design application in Liechtenstein is examined according to the formal requirements only.

• Novelty grace period

If the design became available to the public at an officially recognized international exhibition or when such a disclosure was made in bad faith by any third party within six months prior to the filing or priority date, this disclosure does not disprove the novelty of the design in Liechtenstein.

• Grant, validity term and design renewal fees

The official grant fee is not stipulated for design registration in Liechtenstein. The validity term of design in Liechtenstein is five years from the filing date. Protection can be renewed for another four terms of 5 years for a maximum period of 25 years upon payment of renewal fees. A renewal request should be submitted within three months before the expiration date of the registration. The industrial design may also be renewed within 3 months after the renewal due date with payment of a corresponding surcharge.

• Duration of registration procedure

The procedure for the design registration in Liechtenstein usually takes 9 to 12 months.

• Representation by a patent attorney

It is required for foreigners to perform industrial design prosecution in Liechtenstein through an agent, a registered Liechtenstein patent attorney.
