Fees associated with filing industrial design applications in Bahrain, as well as other design fees, are available in the fee calculator.

• Multiple-class applications

Multiple design applications (up to 50 designs) are possible in Bahrain, provided that together they form a homogeneous unit. 

• Filing requirements in Bahrain

The official language of the proceedings before the Bahraini patent office is Arabic; however, it is possible to file an application in the English language. If filed in English, the authorised Arabic translation should be filed within 4 months.

To obtain the date of filing, it is necessary to provide:
- the applicant’s details;
- copy for each section of the design, captured from various angles;
- priority details (if any);
- the payment of the filing fee.

A certified copy of the Priority Document with its authorised translation into Arabic should be filed in a 3 months period after the filing date.

The original Power of Attorney must be legalized or apostilled and may be filed within 3 months from the filing date.

The term for filing a design application claiming conventional priority is six months from the priority date.

• Examination of a design application in Bahrain

Industrial designs in Bahrain are subject to formal examination only.

•  Novelty grace period

There is no novelty grace period stipulated for industrial designs in Bahrain.

• Grant, validity term and design renewal fees

The validity of a registered design in Bahrain is ten years from the date of filing, renewable for a further five-year period for once only. The renewal fee shall be paid within the last year of the registration validity. In addition, industrial designs in Bahrain are subject to the payment of annual maintenance fees that are due from the second year of the publication date and must be paid on the anniversary of the publication. Late payment of the annual fee is possible together with the payment of a surcharge.

• Duration of registration procedure

If the registration process goes smoothly, the approximate registration time from filing to grant is 4-6 months.

•  Representation by a patent attorney

For foreign applicants, it is necessary to perform industrial design registration through an agent, a registered Bahraini patent attorney.
