• Multiple design applications

Multiple design applications are possible in Algeria. The number of designs in a single application should not exceed 100.

• Filing requirements of a design application in Algeria

Industrial design applications in Algeria must be filed in French.

Minimum filing documents in Algeria include:
- request for design registration;
- design representation in JPG format;
- specification according to the Locarno classification;
- an explanatory legend (a brief paragraph explaining the novelty and originality of the design);
- payment of the corresponding fees.

A certified copy of the Priority Document alongside a verified French translation should be submitted within three months from the filing date.

Simply signed Power of Attorney should be submitted within two months from the date of filing.

• Examination of a design application in Algeria

Design applications in Algeria are examined as to form and novelty.

• Novelty grace period

The novelty grace period for a design in Algeria constitutes six months prior to the date of filing if the design was displayed at an officially recognised exhibition.

• Grant, validity term and design renewal fees

The initial validity term of design protection in Algeria is one year from the date of filing. The maximum protection period is 10 years. The request for an extension of the protection period may be made either at the time of filing or within 6 months before the one-year period expires.

• Duration of registration procedure

In the case of a smooth prosecution procedure, design registration process takes an average of one year in Algeria.

• Representation by a patent attorney

For foreign applicants, it is recommended to perform design registration procedure in Algeria through an agent, a registered Algerian patent attorney.
