  • Trademark fees

  • Multiple-class applications

Multiple-class trademark applications are possible in Egypt. However, it is recommended to file single-class applications as this may help to avoid unnecessary delay in the processing of the registration if one of the classes faces objection.

  • Filing requirements in Egypt

The official language of proceedings before the Egyptian Trademarks and Industrial Designs Office is Arabic.

For obtainment of the date of filing a trademark application in Egypt must contain:
- request for registration of a trademark;
- name and address of the applicant;
- list of the goods and/or services;
- representation of the trade mark;
- proof of payment of the prescribed fees.

If priority is claimed, a certified copy of the Priority Document should be filed within 3 months from the date of filing.

The legalization of the Power of Attorney up to the Egyptian Consulate in Arabic is required. It may be filed simultaneously or within 6 months from the date of filing a trademark application.

The term for filing a trademark application in Egypt claiming conventional priority is 6 months from the priority date.

  • Publication, opposition and examination of a trademark application in Egypt

Trademark applications in Egypt are subject to formal and substantive examination.

If a trademark application has been accepted by the Trademark Office, the decision accepting the application for the registration of the trademark will be published in the Official Gazette.

Any person may oppose the registration of a published trademark within 60 days from the date of publication of the decision.

  • Grant, validity term and trademark renewal

The official fee for registration should be paid within 2 months after expiration of the opposition period. The validity term of a trademark in Egypt is 10 years from the date of filing and it’s indefinitely renewable for 10 year periods.

An application for renewal must be filed during the last year of the protection period. A trademark may be renewed within 6 months after the renewal due date providing that a corresponding surcharge has been paid.

  • Duration of registration procedure

The average processing time from first filing to registration is approximately 18-24 months provided that no objections are raised.

  • Use requirement

Registration of the trademark in Egypt may be cancelled on the grounds of non-use upon a third party’s request if it has not been used for 5 years from registration of a trademark. 

  • Representation by a trademark attorney

Foreign applicants must appoint an Egyptian registered trademark attorney to represent them before the Trademarks and Industrial Designs Office.

2. The time limit for filing of a response to the provisional refusal of an international registration in Egypt is 3 months from the date the Office issues the refusal. The language of the response is Arabic. It is recommended to appoint a local representative, and it is necessary to provide an address for service in Egypt.
