New IP fee schedules implemented in Egypt, Brazil, Singapore

Egypt

The Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority (EGIPA) implemented a new fee schedule as of June 18, 2025, which introduced increases to the official patent examination fees.

As of the implementation of the new fee, the cost for the examination of a patent application has doubled, rising from 25,000 EGP to 50,000 EGP.

In addition to the alteration of costs, the period of time permitted for the payment of examination and expert fees has been shortened from six months from the filing date of the application, to three months from the notification date. Should the applicant fail to meet the three-month payment deadline, the patent application will be suspended until the required examination and late payment fees are paid.

Additional fees will also apply for cases in which the EGIPA finds it necessary to consult an expert report in relation to examination, such as in appeal proceedings.

Brazil

The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) implemented a new fee schedule and structure for trademark services as of August 7, 2025, with further alterations to fees being implemented from September 20, 2025.

Among the changes, the filing and registration grant fees were consolidated into one single fee as of September 20, 2025, which is now due at the initial application stage. From August 7, 2025, an adjustment to the filing fee was implemented, however this fee does not yet cover the costs for registration.

From September 20, 2025 applications with pre-approved specifications comprise a fee of 880 BRL per class for both the filing and registration of the mark, whilst free-text specification applications and Madrid designations comprise 1,720 BRL per class for both the filing and registration of a trademark. These changes also coincide with the elimination of the maintenance fees for the first ten years, with the certificate of issuance being automatic and free.

Discounts have also been introduced for certain applicants. As such, a 100% discount is available for individuals in vulnerable situations registered in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico), and persons with disabilities registered in the Federal Government’s Disability Reference Database. A new priority route for the processing of trademarks has also been made available for applications eligible for fee exemption, which will be free in such circumstances.

Discounts of 50% are available for natural persons that are not company participants related to the filed request, microenterprises, individual microentrepreneurs, small businesses, Simple Innovation Enterprises, scientific, technological, and innovation institutions (ICTs), non-profit entities, and public bodies acting on their own behalf.

A new priority processing route for trademarks relating to strategic or public policy reasons has also been introduced. The fee associated with requesting the priority processing of a trademark is set at 890 BRL.

The introduction of new trademark fees, as well as the implementation of a revised system and discounted routes for obtaining trademark protection for eligible applicants, indicates a drive toward a more modernised IP protection route in Brazil.

Singapore

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) implemented increases to its official fee schedule as of September 1, 2025, with additional alterations set to enter into force on April 1, 2026.

Trademarks

Among the fees which were implemented as of September 1, 2025, the filing fee in relation to a national trademark application which does not include a pre-approved specification has increased from 380 SGD per class to 410 SGD per class, as has the filing of an international registration or designation of Singapore through Madrid Protocol.

New fees of 25 SGD and 50 SGD have been introduced for the first and second requests for an extension of time for responding to examination reports, respectively, with the fee for the third request rising by 50% from 50 SGD to 75 SGD.

The cost for the filing of amendments to a trademark specification, class number, or priority claim of a trademark application has increased by 25% from 40 SGD to 50 SGD per class as of September 2025, and is set to rise further to 60 SGD starting from April 1, 2026.

The trademark renewal fee has inflated from 440 SGD to 480 SGD in relation to requests made on or before the expiry of the mark, whilst the late renewal fee has increased from 645 SGD per class to 700 SGD per class.

Patents

In relation to PCT fees in Singapore, the costs associated with international searches, additional searches, or supplementary search requests have risen from 2,240 SGD to 2,350 SGD respectively, whilst the fee in relation to the requesting of a preliminary examination has increased from 830 SGD to 900 SGD.

In relation to patent annuities, all fees have seen an increase of approx. 7%, with the costs for maintaining a patent over the 5th, 6th or 7th year having risen from 165 SGD to 176 SGD, the 14th, 15th, or 16th year from 775 SGD to 830 SGD, and the 20th year from 1,120 SGD to 1,200 SGD. The cost payable for each annuity year beyond the 20th has increased from 1,380 SGD to 1,470 SGD.

Industrial Designs

The fees in relation to industrial design applications have risen by an approx. 33%, with the cost associated with the filing of a request to amend an application for registration of a design inflating from 45 SGD to 60 SGD.

New fees have also been introduced in relation to the filing of requests for an extension of time, with the fee for the first request constituting 25 SGD, the second 50 SGD, and the third and each subsequent request 75 SGD.

The increases to Singaporean IP fees signify the first alterations to the official fee schedule since 2022.
