Satellite images (900) of a growing area captured repeatedly within a specified time window are obtained (602, 702). At least some of the satellite images are selected (706) for processing, one or more overall characteristics of the growing area at one or more times are identified (802) using at least some of the selected satellite images, and a subset of the selected satellite images within the specified time window is selected (806) based on the overall characteristic(s). The growing area is divided (1002) into multiple regions (904), and one or more characteristics of each of the regions of the growing area are identified (1004) based on the subset of the selected satellite images. At least one classifier (306) is used to classify (1006, 1010) each of the regions of the growing area as either containing weeds or not containing weeds based on the one or more characteristics of the regions of the growing area and the one or more overall characteristics of the growing area.[French]
