The present invention relates to compositions and non-invasive methods for detecting cell death by detecting beta cell genomic DNA in a urine sample. The invention relates the discovery that the presence of hypomethylated beta cell DNA outside of the pancreas of a subject is indicative of beta cell death.[French]
