L'invention concerne un polyétherimide à ramification automatique qui comprend une première unité de répétition dérivée de la polymérisation du dianhydride aromatique et une première diamine, la première diamine comprenant un groupe hydrocarboné aromatique en C6-24 substitué par carboxyle ; et éventuellement, une seconde unité de répétition dérivée de la polymérisation d'un dianhydride aromatique et d'une seconde diamine, la seconde diamine comprenant un groupe hydrocarboné divalent en C1-30, comprenant facultativement 1 à 4 hétéroatomes, le polyétherimide à ramification automatique ayant une extrémité coiffée par de l'anhydride phtalique.
