Abstract[English] A barrier (10), comprising an elongate arm (12); a shaft (28) extendable through the arm (12) in orthogonal relationship thereto, the shaft (28) being rotatable with the arm (12) as a unit; a column (42, 33, 46) from which the shaft (28) is supportable, the column (42, 33, 46) having an internal chamber (70) through which a portion of the shaft (28) is extendable; and at least one shear-resistant structure positioned within the internal chamber (70) in shear-receiving relationship to the shaft (28). The shaft (28) extends through the arm (12) in orthogonal relationship thereto, the column (42, 33, 46) supports the shaft (28) and the at least one shear-resistant structure is positioned within the internal chamber (70) in shear-receiving relationship to the shaft (28). This shear-resistant structure help to dissipate shear energy that might be transmitted to the shaft (28) as a result of a vehicular collision with the arm (12).
